Columbus Day is celebrated as national holiday in US. Also known as El Dia de la Raza, Columbus Day was first celebrated on 1792. After a lapse of around hundred years, it was again celebrated on the request of President Benjamin Harrison. From 1920 onwards, Columbus Day came to be observed annually and around 1971, it became a ‘federal legal holiday’, observed on the 2nd Monday in October.

History bears testimony to the fact that Columbus Day in the United States is celebrated as a historical holiday. It is indeed observed with different parades. The traditional parade of the Columbus Day refers to the New York Fifth Avenue parade. Beauty pageants are also held on this day. This day celebrates the Spanish heritage of the Latin American peoples and includes brightly colored fiestas. Costa Rica observes Día de las Culturas or the Day of the Cultures, Bahamas celebrate Discovery Day whereas Spain is known to observe Hispanic Day and Venezuela celebrates Day of indigenous Resistance or Día de la Resistencia Indígena. However, Minnesota does not celebrate Columbus Day observance.
