Wiener Festwochen or the Vienna Festival is an important cultural festival of Vienna. Vienna, the capital of Austria has been the seat of Habsburgs for almost 7 centuries. Hence the city has acquired worldwide reputation for performing arts. Such cultural festival is best reflected in the Vienna Festival or Wiener Festwochen as it is expressed in German language. This festival is held every year during May and June and lasts for five weeks. In 1951, when the festival started, the country was occupied by the Allies. But since then, Wiener Festwochen has displayed a high artistic sense and has maintained its artistic level till date. Thus with the passage of time Wiener Festwochen has matured in its form and content to become one of the most important cultural festivals of Vienna. The festival has gained worldwide reputation for its thought-provoking programmes.
The Vienna Festival along with Viennale film festival attracts thousands of tourists every year all over the world. As many as 32 poductions and 165 performances from countries such as Bosnia, Canada, Denmark, France, India, Israel, Japan, New Zealand and South Korea is offered by the festival. This indeed is sufficient to quench the thirst of theatre and music fans.
Theater an der Wien has been the centre for theatre since 1962. Apart from this the Vienna festival utilizes most of the important venues throughout the capital city. Every year the festival begins with an anthem composed by Werner Pirchner. Luc Bondy has been the artistic director of the festival since 1988.
