The word Nadaw literally refers to the ninth month of the calendar in Myanmar. It actually corresponds to the month of December, if we go by the traditional English calendar. If we go by the actual Burmese pronounciation, the word is correctly spelt as Nattaw. The term Nat means heavenly spirit. During the reign of the kings in Burma or Myanmar, as it is called today, it used to be the month for making religious offerings to gods. May be that is how this month secured its new name. All those who have made significant contributions to the Burmese literature in a calendar year are also rewarded with prestigious titles and honors.
The Burmese people use the month of Nadaw for indulging in various cultural and literary activities. Prize distribution
ceremonies are usually organized on the first day of the Waxing moon of this month. This particular month also marks the anniversary of reputed literary personalities like Na-wa-de, Nat-Shin-naung and many more. It is also the time of the year during which the writers and poets from this part of the world hold talk sessions, discussions and seminars on varied literary subjects.
Thazin is known to be the flower of this particular Burmese month. Even the typical zodiac sign of this month is Sagittarius or the Dhanu. Howsoever, the official ceremony of Nadaw is still the Literati day which had its onset long back during the reign of King Bodawhpaya.
