Nayon is the third month of the Burmese calendar that is the month of June according to Gregorian calendar. The most important event that takes place in the month of Nayon in Burma, one of the remotest south-east Asian nations is the scripture test for monks and nuns living in the monasteries. Nayon celebrations are one of the many celebrations marking the social and religious fabric of life for the Burmese people. This celebration in Burma or Myanmar, as the country is known now, is organized with a lot of fanfare and enthusiasm.
Lord Buddha had devoted his life in the preaching of principles of life to the masses. He preached of an austere life and believed that austerity is the ultimate goal of attaining salvation and is the best way to get rid of all sorts of miseries. Buddha also spoke about different principles that should be followed in life, such as, speaking the truth, not harming others, right faith, right knowledge, right action, right faith and many more. He held that following such principles are not an easy task but if one cans really follow then s/he is certain to attain salvation.
These words of Buddha are prescribed in the book form, known as the Tripitakas that have become a sort of religious script for the followers of Buddhism. The nuns and other followers of Buddhism are supposed to follow the principles of Buddhism strictly as by following them one can easily achieve salvation. To maintain such discipline, in the month of Nayon a religious scripture test is held for the nuns and monks in monasteries all over Burma. It is a kind of written and recitation test, the main aim is to judge the devotion of the nuns and the monks towards the faith and also towards the teachings of Lord Buddha. Thus it becomes the ideal time for the monks and nuns to shower their utmost devotion to Lord Buddha and his teachings.
