Tazaungmon is considered to be the eighth month in accordance with the lunar calendar of Myanmar. In most cases, this popular Burmese festival of Tazaungmon tentatively falls in the month of November. This festive occasion also bids farewell to the monsoon and welcomes the Tazaungmon with lights and various other forms of celebrations. Among the popular Burmese celebrations, Tazaungmon is celebrated not just to mark the seasonal changes but also to bring in happiness and prosperity in the lives of Burmese people.
To celebrate the Tazaungmon festivities, the robes of the Kathina Monk’s are offered. During this time of the year, the Krattika plant is known to follow the moon in the country of Myanmar or Burma. This time also marks the rising of the MahaVinayaka from his natural and periodic state of long rest. According to a traditional Buddhist custom prevailing in the land of Myanmar, homage is paid to the gods on the full moon night. Apart from the homage, sweet meats and lights are also offered to the deities in an attempt to impress them and to secure their blessings.
This time of the Burmese year is also considered auspicious for offering the traditional Yellow robes to the monks. It is traditionally believed that the mother of Gautam Buddha wished to give these yellow robes and had only a night to do so. She also threaded it inside a single night and offered the same to the prince Siddharth. In remembrance to this event, competitions involving knitting of yellow robes are celebrated throughout this country.
Later on these yellow threads are offered to the monks dwelling in different monsteries and this is indeed a huge festive occasion for all the Burmese people. Numerous gifts are exchanged between people dwelling in this part of the world on the eve of Tazaungmon. The Kathein festival is perhaps the most significant occasion occurring during this time of the Burmese year.
