A culturally rich country, Cambodia boasts of a number of celebrations and festivals throughout the world. Bonn Om Teuk (meaning Boat Racing) is one of the important and popular river festivals of Cambodia. There is big turnaround that takes place during the days of the festival. The festival is a boat rowing contest held at the end of rainy season each year. Around that time the Mekong River goes down much below the normal level. This allows Tonle Sap River to flow from the other directions. A substantial section of Cambodian populace participate ion this festival. Soccer and cock fighting are the other games that make up the festive mood of Cambodian people during the course of Bon Om Touk-Water Festival.
The festival is held at such a time of the year, when there is full moon, the dry season and the fishing season begins. The waters of the Tonle Sap River get back to its normal from the Great Lake to the Mekong Delta. The general ambience reverts back to that of Filipino Fiesta. During the time of the festivities people of Cambodia and also from the capital city gather at the nook and corners to be a part of this gala extravaganza. Boat races, open air live musical concerts, fun and entertainment, fireworks; food stalls add gaiety and mirth to the festival. Interesting part is that the entire scene of mirth and gaiety are held close by to the Royal Palace. 450 dragon boats are registered during the days of the euphoria with approximately 25,000 to 30,000 rowers as participants from across the country.
