Bonn Pchum Ben Celebrations is a religious ceremony of Cambodia held every year in September. During this ceremony, the family members of the deceased remember the spirit of the near and dear ones who are no more with them. This is a long 15 day Popular Cambodian celebration. People in Cambodian villages bring food to the temples or pagodas.
During the final days celebrations locals dress up in their traditional attire to visit the temples or pagodas. Every family’s present baskets of flowers to the monks and children offer food to them. Visitors to the temple pray at the Altar of the Gods and Goddesses fro the welfare of their near and dear ones. According to the Khmer faith is concerned, cultivating Pchum Ben is off utmost necessity, other wise those who shun from the daily responsibility are badly despised by the ancestors.
Bonn Pchum Ben Celebrations are meant to remember the spirit of the dead. This Cambodian festival is divided into two parts:
- The first 14 days of the celebrations are referred to as Bonn Dak Ben; means is offered to the monks.
- The penultimate day of the celebrations is referred to as Bonn Pchum Ben. On this day, the Full Moon shines and the offerings are made to the Monks of the Pagodas
As per the Khmer Buddhist Calendar, on the popular Cambodian celebrations of Bonn Pchum Ben Buddhists visit the temples or pagodas and offers fruits or clothes to the monks to remember their near and dear ones.The moment the devotees visit the temples, music is played. Calm and somber ambiance makes the entire celebrations soothing. The common belief is that the soul of the deceased should be peaceful at the Eternal Heaven forever.
