The Cheese Rolling Festival takes place in Gloucestershire, a small country side in England. The history of the festival is not very clear, however, it can be said that the festival started hundred years back and is not a religious festival but a social one. It is more of a celebration than a festival, starts at the beginning of the summer. There are some stories to relating to the festival that the Cheese Rolling celebration is observed to address the successful harvest. The festival is also celebrated to maintain the Commoner's Right for the people of the Cooper's Hill.
The Cheese Rolling celebration is sporty in nature. The most brave and courageous ones participate in the event. Around twenty or more participant take part in the sport.The celebration is all about the participants' courage to stand on the top of the Cooper's Hill which has a steep gradient.With the count down of three , a cheese chunk is dropped from the hill which starts rolling, and finally with the countdown of four the participants drive down. This starts the rolling of the participants also. In the midst of this incredible sporting action, broken limbs, bruises and other fatal injuries are common. The success of the event lies with the person who gets hold of the chunk of cheese. On the day of the celebration, four races take place and one of them is organized exclusively for the females.
This strange festival of the natives of Gloucestershire in spite of its dangerous and fatalistic nature is quite popular as an important British celebration.
