Every year in the month of August the Notting Hill Carnival festival takes place in Notting Hill in England. The festival goes on for two to three days. The members of the Caribbean population in England arranges the festival. This particular carnival has attracted millions of people in the area every year. The festival generally take place on a Saturday and on a Sunday. Mainly on Saturday a competition between different bands take place, this is known as the Panorama. The main blast take place on Sunday when different processions come out on the streets.
Mainly two routes are made, one for the children and for the young ones which is a shorter one the other one for the adults which undoubtedly the longer one. Sometimes the main and the magnificent parade takes place on Monday. The route of the main parade is about three to four miles, the different roads that are cross through Great Western Road, Ladbroke Grove, Chepstow Road and the Westbourne Road. The parade comprises of variants of bands, both mobile and static sound systems. Apart from music, people disguise themselves with different colorful clothings and costumes. The traditional elements like the soca and calypso are even found nowadays.
This Carnival was first held in 1959 probably in the month of January. The festival for its first time was not held in a proper manner because of the racial discrimination in England then. The festival was celebrated in a small scale and it was held in door in the St. Pancras Town Hall. The indoor festival was very much popular at that time, it was only with the initiative of Claudia Jones to make the festival as an out door one. Claudia Jones is still known as the Mother of the Notting Hill Festival. It was only with her initiative that the festival is now recognized as the festival of Notting hill and not narrowly speaking a festival of the Caribbeans. The festival presently has got immense popularity in England and people irrespective of all discriminations actively participate in the festival.
