Ratu Sir Lala Sukuna Day is one of the popular celebrations of Fiji. It is celebrated every year on the last Monday of May as a national holiday. Also known as Ratu Sukuna Day, this day is celebrated in memory of the father of modern Fiji, Ratu Sir Lala Sukuna (1888-1958). During the week preceding Ratu Sukuna Day, public celebrations comprising of speeches and events are held throughout the country. On the closing day, a speech is given by the President of Fiji to mark the end of celebrations.
To wash and clean the statue of Ratu Sir Lala Sukuna many people from the common masses could also be seen entering the Parliament grounds during the celebrations. On this day, many social organizations such as schools and places of importance such as the council of chiefs are inaugurated and opened to the public. People compose and sing songs to mark the celebrations. Further, special exhibitions featuring photographs, medals, walking sticks and other belongings of Sukuna are displayed at the Fiji Museum in Suva.
