Regarded as the most famous and biggest film festivals in the world, Cannes Film Festival is held at Palais des Festivals, France, every year from the 3rd week of May. Credited many a times for setting the benchmark for global films, Cannes Film Festival showcases some of the best films from around the world every year.
In 1939, the first Cannes Film Festival was held as an answer to the then leading Venice Film Festival. But as the war broke out, only one film called The Hunchback of Notre Dame was screened at the festival at the Cannes Film Festival. It was only in the year 1946 that a complete film festival could be arranged at Cannes.Again, due to some constraints, no screenings were held in 1948 and 1950. But as they say, what is to happen would happen, with the end of the war,Cannes Film Festival shot into the limelight again. Gradually taking the shape of the grandest film fest on earth, this festival continues to enthrall the hearts of fans, admirers and critics from all over the world.
Although most of the films are screened at Palais des Festivals, some of the celluloid masterpieces are also screened at the cinema halls throughout the town. While most of the screenings are strictly by invitation, Cannes Film Festival also organizes some events open for the public.
Apart from the main competition for commercial films, Cannes Film Festival also organizes a competition for Short Films and Un Certain Regard competition comprising of high-quality features. Though these films may not be deemed suitable for the main competition, they are worthy of plaudits and a standing ovation for their artistic beauty.
