The Carnival in Haiti is considered to be the beginning of a holy era. This Carnival is the time for the Haitians to repent and to rectify all their faults that they had made (if any). The word Carnival is a Latin word that means Meat Farewell. The Carnival period is brought to an end on a Tuesday, which is known as the Fat Tuesday or Mardi-Gras. The Wednesday following the Fat Tuesday is known as the Ash Wednesday which marks the beginning of the Lent. During this period, according to the rituals of the Roman Catholic Church fast is kept by the people. At the end of these rituals the Carnival festival is celebrated, exorbitant in style, manner and trends.
The participants in the Carnival processions put on colorful costumes, disguising themselves. The most important element of the Carnival procession is the music. Different bands playing loud music, traversing the streets is the attracting principle of the Carnival. The colorful clothes and costumes that the participants put on shows that after a long time of hardships their lives are field up with colors. The Carnival festival plays an important role in the lives of the people living in Haiti. The Carnival festival also marks the provision for a host of food items and dishes for the participants.
