Celtic people celebrated an occasion called ‘Samhain’, a Gaelic term meaning November and are defined as the ‘end of summer’. This also meant the beginning of the bleak and cold winter season. The festival of ‘Samhain’ was dedicated to the Lord of the Dead. Hence, all the mysterious symbols are attached to this carnival. Also known as All Soul’s Day, some of the Halloween symbols with their relative description are:

Owls

It was believed by the native people that owls ate the souls of the dying by swooping down onto earth. Hence, owl became a Halloween symbol. It is never seen during the day, it is a night creature and people associate owls to bad omen, death and ultimate disaster.

Ghosts and Skeletons

These Halloween Symbols are representative of death, mystery and short span of life. It is believed that on the night of Halloween, the spirits of the dead persons roamed the earth freely.

Black Cats

During Middle Ages, on Easter and Shrove Tuesday, black cats are hunted and burned as they represented spirits or even incarnated humans, thereby, relating them to occultism.

Broomstick

Broomstick is a very relative Halloween symbol. It is associated with witches. But in ancient times, brooms were symbols of fertility. It was believed that while performing jumping dance, the higher the vault, the higher would be the crop growth. With respect to Halloween, since it was celebrated during rainy season, brooms were used as a tool used to vault over the puddles and large amount of the water.

Jack-o-Lanterns

This is today the universal Halloween symbol all over the world. These are placed on porches and in windows in hope that Jack will take the light without disturbing anyone. The Jack-o-Lantern carved out of pumpkin is an essential part of Halloween celebration also.
