Baisakhi Dishes

The festival Baisakhi is a popular harvest festival of Punjab and a major religious festival of the Sikhs. Cooking the various traditional Punjabi dishes on this day is an important aspect of the festival Baisakhi. Certain Baisakhi dishes are prepared especially on the occasion of Baisakhi. Different types of popular and traditional recipes of Punjab are savored by North Indians and Punjabis in particular, during Baisakhi celebrations.

The delicious Baisakhi dishes are can also be enjoyed all through the year. Some of the important traditional Baisakhi dishes are:

  • Sarson ka sag
  • Makki di Roti
  • Kheer
  • Til Ke Gajak
  • Til Ke Ladoo
  • Coconut Laddoo
  • Battura
  • Pindi Chana
  • Dry Fruit Kheer
  • Wheat Flour Laddu

All these relishing dishes are for vegetarians. Among the non-vegetarian dishes of the Baisakhi are:

  • Tandoori Chicken
  • Sag Meat
  • Achari Mutton

Kheer

To make Kheer one must arrange

  • 1/4 cup of washed and drained long grain rice.
  • 4 to 5 cups of milk
  • 2 to 3 cardamom seeds which are crushed
  • 2 tablespoons of almonds
  • To garnish, a pinch of saffron is needed. It must be soaked in warm milk.
  • 1 spoon of chopped pistachio nuts.
  • 1 tablespoon of raisins
  • 1 tablespoon of ghee
  • sugar according to your taste

To prepare the sweet dish, you can follow the following steps:

  • Take the rice, milk and cardamom in a pan.
  • Boil it and then simmer it till the rice becomes soft.
  • Add pistachio, almonds, raisins and saffron to the mixture.
  • Cook it again for three to four minutes.
  • Pour sugar. Stir it till it dissolves.
  • Add ghee to the dish and continue stirring till it is cooked properly.

Makki di Roti

To make Makki di Roti, you must have Makki Atta or corn flour, grated radish and salt to taste. Warm water is needed to knead the flour. Makki di Roti with Sarson ka sag will satisfy you at any time of the year giving you the essence of pure Punjabi taste.
