Many exciting rituals and customs have bound themselves to Diwali traditions. You cannot find any regional fluctuation in them in different parts of India. One of the most unparalleled Diwali customs is gambling. Gambling is normally regarded as a frailty in Northern part of India. It is said that in ancient age, Goddess Parvati was playing dice with her husband Lord Shiva on the day of Diwali. She was enjoying herself so much while she was playing. Then she gave a boon that whoever gambles on this day would be very lucky throughout the year. Now, the dice game has become outdated and has been substituted by cards. Well, many people mark a limit to the games that can be played as gradually it becomes a habit.

On the first day of Diwali, people clean their houses to welcome goddess Lakshmi as she is the goddess of wealth. Devotees worship goddess Lakshmi in the evenings and light oil-filled diyas to drive out the shadows of evil spirits. Devotional songs are one of the Diwali customs. It is believed that the chanting of devotional songs brings peace and prosperity in life. Naivedya (traditional sweets) is offered to the Goddess. It is also a part of Diwali customs.
