Significance of Diwali cannot be explained in a nutshell as the day is of great importance for Indians. The word Diwali carries a deeper meaning. According to Hindu lunar calendar, Diwali falls on the month of kartik. A very important day in the life of Indian people, the day is celebrated with utmost dedication. People light earthen lamps and candles and decorate their house. It is believed that Goddess Laxmi visits the house on this auspicious day of Diwali.

TThe significance of Diwali is so much that the Indian community residing all around the world never likes to miss the celebration. The significance of Diwali is very well evident in the stories mentioned in Hindu mythology. According to Hindu mythology, Diwali is significant because the day celebrates the return of Lord Ram with his wife Sita and brother Laxman after fourteen years of exile. Also the day signifies victory of good over evil. The significance of Diwali varies from state to state, like for instance, in West Bengal the day is celebrated by worshiping Goddess Durga whereas in western India people worship Goddess Laxmi for prosperity and good luck.

All Indians celebrate Diwali in their own traditional way but significance of Diwali is same for everyone. Diwali lights associated with the celebration signify hope and life. Diwali is originated from the word 'Deepavali' which means “row of lights” and these row of lights break the darkness of the fortnight and bring light to our lives.
