There is a historical background regarding the origin of the Hindu New Year celebrations. It dates back to 57 BC and relates to the legendary Hindu King Vikramaditya. According to the myth, around 12th century a king known as Gardabhilla kidnapped a nun called Saraswati. She was the sister of the famous Jain monk named Kalakacharya. He sought the help of the Saka king to save his sister. Saka king defeated and captivated him. After Gardabhillas’s death, his son, Vikramaditya invaded Ujjain and pushed out the Sakas. This day of victory is commemorated as the new era of ‘Vikram Samvat’ and thus the Hindu New Year celebrations began.
