Nepal is a small landlocked Asian country that is high in the Himalayas and lies between India and China. It is, in fact, a neighboring country for India. We are sure to find numerous festivals in the land of Nepal. In fact, it is said that Nepal celebrates a festival every week! Nepal consists of more than forty groups of people with different religions and customs. One of the most celebrated occasions for all of them is the New Year or Nava Varsha day. Let us find about Nepalese Nava Varsha, Nava Varsha traditions, Nava Varsha customs and history of Napalese Nava Varsha.

People of Nepal follow the Bikram Era or Bikram Sambat calendar. And based on this calendar, Nava Varsha marks the first day of the first month of the New Year. Nepalese observe official holiday on the Nava Varsha Day. Each of the family celebrates the Nava Varsha festivity in temples, homes and public places. In Nepal, festivals are connecting to each other. Nepalese finish one and get engrossed in the other. If you are a traveler there, you would definitely enjoy the festive spirit and fervor that dons the whole of Nepal.

New Year Day, which always fails in the middle of April, observed throughout Nepal as the first day of the official Nepalese solar Calendar, i.e., the first day of Baisakh. In Bhaktapur, a place fifteen kilometres from Kathmandu, the ‘Festival of Bisket' is celebrated on New Year’s Day. During this festival a tall wooden post is erected called ‘lingo’. This is done in order to commemorate the great and victorious battle of Mahabharata.

After two days of the event, images of the god Bhairav, Bhadrakaii and other goddesses are pulled in chariots through crowds of cheering onlookers. As soon as the chariot reaches the open place, there is a war between the people belonging to upper and lower parts of the town. It is believed that whoever wins the battle would be showered with good luck, and fortunes in the upcoming year. Besides, the ancient town in Kathmandu called thimi also observes customary rituals and celebrations on this day.
