Onam Celebrations

Home » Indian Celebrations » Onam Celebrations

Onam is one of the most popular festivals in southern parts of India. Though mostly observed in south India, the celebration does have national implication. This celebration takes place during August and September. Through the festivities, the memorable contributions of King Mahabali are cherished. During his reign, communal harmony and prosperity was on its highest keel. This made the people of the state happy. In spite of the immense popularity of the King, luck did not click in his favor. A belief emerged that the King is unacceptable to The Almighty. The glorious epoch of King Mahabali ended when Vamana expelled him from his throne to an unknown place. The King paid his first visit to the kingdom, the moment after his expulsion. The period was interesting as that was the first month of Chingam, as per Malayalam Calendar, which is full of joy and merriment.

Onam is the first harvest season. With nature becomes beautiful and reactive, the natural beauty of Kerala reaches its peak. Flowers are seen blossoming in and around the fields and butterflies seem to be sprinkling color of rainbow pattern. The locales decorate their houses with'Onapookalam' or decoration arrangements with flowers to welcome King Mahabali. A meal is also served with 21 different types of curries and three types of sweets are prepared to celebrate the moment amidst mirth and gaiety. Songs are sung as mark of a tribute to the King. Along with songs 'Kaikottikali', a popular dance form takes place in the household. A ten day long festival, Onam is celebrated amidst gay and mirth, all over Kerala and parts of Tamil Nadu.

The natural beauty of the Onam festival is really invigorating. Those who have had glimpses of the festival in person, the moment of the festivities remain cherished in their hearts for ever. During the ten days of Onam festivities, days are celebrated as such, Atham, Chithira, Chodhi, Visakam, Anizham, Thriketa, Moolam, Pooradam, Uthradam and Thiruvonam. The festivals during these ten days are celebrated without any fixed norms and rituals.

There was once an opinion that Onam is only the state festival of Kerala. Gradually with the passing of time, it has gained the status of a national festival. Owing to its changing character, it is treated more as a national celebration that is enjoyed by people from different parts of India as well as those who visit India from other parts of the world.
