Onam is one of the most popular festivals in southern parts of India. Though mostly observed in south India, the celebration does have national implication. This celebration takes place during August and September. Through the festivities, the memorable contributions of King Mahabali are cherished. The locales decorate their houses with'Onapookalam' or decoration arrangements with flowers to welcome King Mahabali. A meal is also served with 21 different types of curries and three types of sweets are prepared to celebrate the moment amidst mirth and gaiety. Songs are sung as mark of a tribute to the King. Along with songs 'Kaikottikali', a popular dance form takes place in the household. A ten day long festival, Onam is celebrated amidst gay and mirth, all over Kerala and parts of Tamil Nadu.
