Legends behind Rakhi signify the importance of Rakhi in India. Legends behind Rakhi are described in ancient Indian scriptures like the Puranas and in epics like the Mahabharata. India is known to the world for its various festivals and Raksha Bandhan is one of the most celebrated Festival of India Raksha Bandhan is a festival of the brothers and sisters. But the legends behind Rakhi or Raksha Bandhan dates back to ancient India. Celebrationsonnet.com enquires into the various legends behind Raksha Bandhan.

According to the Puranas, one of the legends behind Rakhi is that once Lord Indra was fighting with Daitya-Raaja and suffered huge setbacks. Therefore, he sought the help of his Guru, Brihaspati. It was a Shravan Purnima when Lord Indra's wife Sachi devi, also known as Indrani and Brihaspati tied the sacred threads on the wrist of Lord Indra while chanting sacred mantras. This sacred thread is known as Raksha. It is believed that this thread gave victory to Lord Indra in the subsequent battle and he re-established his sovereignty in the heavenly kingdom.

One of the other legends behind Rakhi corresponds to the mythological story of Lord Vishnu and his disciple Demon King Bali. Requested by the Demon King, Lord Vishnu had once taken up the task of guarding the kingdom of the Demon King. Goddess Laxmi disguised as a Brahmin woman went to the King and sought refuge till her husband returned. On the day of Shravan Purnima, Laxmiji tied the sacred thread on the wrist of the King. She then revealed to the King who she was and the purpose of her coming. She told the King that she wanted to live with her husband and that would be possible if the King wanted. The King was stirred by the request of the Goddess and accepted it. It is believed that since then it has become the tradition to invite the sisters for the thread tying ceremony.
