Soon after the Church took the initiative of reforming the Roman calendar, one of the major changes that came into existence was the feast of the archangels. All over the country of Ireland, September 29th is celebrated as the feast day honoring St. Michaels. Throughout the Celtic lands, this festival is marked as the end of the harvesting season. During this time, the farmers calculate the number of cattle's which they can feed in the coming winter season, and those which they needs to sell or slaughter.
In many parts of this country, farmers give geese as a token of gift to the poor. In some parts of this country, an age old tradition of electing the new Mayor is being followed till date. In Watford, it is marked as the end of the tourism season that ends during this time.In an attempt to embrace this occasion, a strange custom is followed by the people associated with the holiday business. They organize a procession to the nearby sea beach and cast a simulacrum of St. Michael into the sea, as an act of protest against loss in revenues.
However, in the country of Scotland the Feast of St. Michaels is more of a thanksgiving tradition with respect to fruits of fields and flocks. In the course of this service, a lamb and a special cake are blessed. In due course of time, baskets are filled with such cakes and roasted lamb pieces are distributed among the poor. Much of this day is spent in hedonistic activities like horse racing and sea wood consumption.
