Italy has been home to a number of well known European cultures and traditions. On an approximate basis, it can be said that for the last three thousand years, this European country has faced migrations as well as invasions from other fellow European countries like Germany, Celtic, Greece and some other countries. This has led to a mixed culture in this part of the world which has some aspects of the traditional Italian culture and some characteristics of other European culture. May be that is the reason for which the different festivals that are celebrated in this European country also seem to be a perfect blend of several customs and traditions.
A number of festivals are organized in this particular European country throughout the year. Although, most of its festivals are seasonal, yet there are some which come as the birth celebration or death anniversary of a renowned political leader or national hero. However, if one really wishes to know about the important Italian festivals, it would be worthwhile for him to get a view of all of them on a monthly basis.
In the month of January, the Italian calendar does not have any big festive occasion. In February, the Almond Blossom Festival is organized every year in the Agrigento city of Sicily. Just like January, the month of March also does not come up with any big festive occasion. However, the Easter does not have any stipulated date and may fall either in the month of March or April.
The month of May comes with the promise of scheduling three important festivals. Firstly, there comes the Palio which involves gothic parades along with horse racing. Next comes the Sant’Efisio festival which is celebrated in Cagliari, Sardinia. Lastly, in the month of May, they have the Race of the Candles at Gubbio in Umbria.A traditional soccer exhibition match is organized in Florence every year in the month of June.
The Palio Di Siena, one of the major horse racing tournaments of the world is organized I the month of July every year in this part of the world. The venue for this mega horse racing event happens to be in Siena. In the month of August, you will get to witness the Joust of the Quintana.
The month of September in Italy again comes up with a number of festive occasions. To begin with, there is the St. Gennaro feast which is organized in Napoli. Next comes the Joust of the Saracen which takes place in Arezzo, Tuscany. Lastly, they again have the Joust of the Quintana, but this time its venue is in Foligno, Umbria. In the month of October, there is the famous wine festival in Italy where wine is poured into fountains. This is the last major festival in an Italian calendar year.
