Carnival of Venice

Home » Italy » Carnival of Venice

Carnival of Venice was organized for the first time in the year 1268. The insurgent nature of this festival in a way emphasizes the revolt against many laws and norms that were made to restrict celebrations in Italy during the medieval times. The land of Venice has always been famous for its Masks. So, this festival is also celebrated by people throughout Venice by wearing multicolored masks.

If we go by traditional beliefs, masks were allowed to the people in between the festival of Santo Stefano and the midnight of the Shrove Tuesday. In the year 1797, Venice was included in Austrian kingdom of Lombardy-Venetia. It was after the famous leader Napoleon Bonaparte had signed the Treaty of Campo Formio. In due course of time, the Austrians established their control over Venice and the famous Carnival of Venice was made to a halt for many years. Eventually the Fascist government stopped the Carnival in the 1930s.

Soon after the onset of this festival, you will find all the streets of Venice, flocked with people wearing masks. As a result of this, no differentiation can be made between the Noble and the common people. The most common costumes that are used by the Venetian people during the course of this event is a long and thick cloak with a mask having long nose. The concept of masked couples also became popular from this Venetian Carnival. In this practice, couples dress like allegorical characters.

Streets of Venice in this time of the year are made memorable by the singers and performers. The singers are mostly seen coming out with their guitars and performing with their instrument in the streets. People are also known to enjoy such songs and performances in high spirits during this Carnival. Though a few mishaps also happen during the span of this festival, yet the spirit of the mass reveals that they are always ready to celebrate this festival in spite of the mischance’s that might creep anytime into the festive scenario.
