Luang Prabang a small town on the banks of the Maekong River in Laos. The annual Boat Race is an important and an acclaimed festival celebrated in Laos. The festival is held in the month of October every year. The main focal point of the festival undoubtedly is the boat racing, but it is followed by extravagant parties and dance items. The next day of the festival is devoted to ceremonial rituals followed by offering food to the monks. However the festival did not come to an end with such things, the next night with the full moon making the ambiance soothing and in such environment many other ritualistic practices take place. This particular moment in the ambiance of the full moon is known as the lantern festival which is the part of the main festival, Boat Racing.
The most exciting and mind blowing part of the festival is when the boats are lit up with candles and are set off to the river for the ride. Each temple in the Luang Prabang prepares one boat each. After a long list of ritualistic practices these boats are launched on the Maekong River. The river with the candles lit boats look magnificent and majestic, it can make you remember of the fairy tales. The boats do not sail monotonously, dance performance and different other activities take place on each boat. The people of Laos become the friendliest creature at this very juncture; they cooperate with each other whole heartedly. The people of Laos are nonetheless the hardest working people in the world; this festival offers the people of Laos with an opportunity to rejoice themselves and to be active again in their work with a short span of merry making.
The river boat festival marks an impact to the people of Laos. The festival is welcomed by the people in a grandeur manner; the preparations for the festival take place from a long time. The ritualistic practices are maintained in a strict pattern.
