Macedonia is a land of rich cultural heritage. Be it art, poetry, music or architecture, the Republic of Macedonia witnesses many festivals throughout year. A large number of tourists come down to this part of the world, to be a part of its festive occasions. Some of the major festivals of this country are as follows:
Ohrid Summer Festival: Celebrated every year from July 12 to August 20, the Ohrid Summer Festival is a musical extravaganza where famous artists from all over the world participate. About 28 musical programs and 12 plays are staged during this festival and tourists from all corners of the world get to witness some of the best contemporary talents.
Balkan Festival of Folk Songs and Dances: Every year from the 3rd till the 8th of July the Balkan Festival of Folk Songs and Dances is held at Ohrid, Macedonia. Mainly a festival on the mellifluous folk songs and dances, the Balkan Festival of Folk Songs and Dances brings to the limelight some of the best folk singers and dancers of this land. For the last 30 years, the Balkan Festival has played host to some of the best original compositions of folk songs and dances of Macedonia.
Struga Poetry Evenings: Started in the year 1961, the Struga Poetry Evenings are celebrated in Struga to mark the death of the martyr brothers Dimitrija and Konstantin Miladinov. More than 5000 poets, writers and literary geniuses are known to participate in such poetry evenings from all parts of the world. Today this festival has attained a grand stature and is celebrated by the Macedonians with immense enthusiasm and passion.
Festival of Folk Instruments and Songs: Every year during the month of June the Festival of Folk Instruments and Songs is held in a village called Dolneni near Prilep. Participated by performers from all around the world, this festival is attended by many tourists and is a big hit in Macedonia. The performers mainly play the folk instruments such as bagpipes, horns, drums and mandolins. While on the other hand, the singers lend their sonorous voices to render some of the popular and traditional folk songs.
Some of the other festivals of Macedonia include Folk Fest, Zlatno Slavejce, the May Opera Evenings, Festival of Old Town Songs, Skopje International Jazz Festival, Ilinden Days of Folk Songs and Dance, Cvetnici, SI-DO and Mak Fest.
