San Marcos National fair or popularly
known as the San Marcos Fair is celebrated
every year in Aguascalientes, Mexico.
One of the most important festivals
of the country, San Marcos Fair is
a 175 year old tradition in Mexico.
Full of happiness, cock fights, bull
fights, good food, colorful clothes
and traditional suits, San Marcos
Fair is often referred to as the "fair
of Mexico" by many people.
With an aim to open agricultural
and livestock markets with different
regions of New Spain, the practice
of holding fairs started in the year1604.
But, it was only in the year 1828,
that a full fledged fair was organized
for the first time from 5th - 20th
of November. The outside balustrade
of the garden, which has been done
in a neoclassical fashion was built
in the year 1842 and is still conserved
and maintained by the fest authorities.
So as to take advantage of the festivities
of the patron saint of San Marcos,
the date of the celebrations were
changed to April.
A special bullring was constructed
on the San Marcos Fair grounds in
the year 1896 for the first time.
Due to immense popularity of the game,
a new bullring was given shape and
finally in the year 1992, the façade
of the bullring was given a makeover
and its seatind capacity was increased
to a whopping 15,000 viewers.
Apart from the spectacular bullfights
and cock fights, some of the other
attractions at San Marcos Fair are
people's theater, young art national
prize, poetry national prize, wood
sculpture contest, the ferial and
the traditional suits competition.
Moreover, the tradition of electing
the Fair Queen, which started in the
year 1924 has brought to the limelight
some of the most beautiful Aguascalientes
women and is a big hit amongst the
masses in the fair.
