History of mother's day dates back to the time of ancient Greek who used to honor Rhea, the mother of Gods. In England mother's day was celebrated as 'Mothering Sunday' on the fourth Sunday of lent to honor Mary, mother of Christ. Apart from attending church services on this day people used to return to their home from cities with Mother's Day cake, flowers, gifts, etc.Mother's day celebration in United States dates back to 1872 at that time Julia Ward Howe suggested that the day has to be dedicated to peace. She organized Mother's day meetings in Boston and Massachusetts every year. But it was Anna Jarvis a School teacher from Philadelphia began the campaign in 1907 to establish the day a national Mother's day.
The thing that persuaded her to began this campaign was her mother's death. She persuaded the church in Grafton to celebrate Mother's day on the second death anniversary of her mother. Later on Anna Jarvis along with her supporters started writing letters to ministers and politicians to establish a national mother's day. Eventually Mother's Day International Association was formed on 1912. Then in 1914 President Woodrow Wilson declared officially that Mother's Day will be celebrated on the second Sunday of May. Thereafter many countries started celebrating Mother's Day.
Apart from celebrating Mother's Day on the second Sunday of May many countries celebrate Mother's Day on 13th May also. Gradually the popularity of Mother's Day increased and it become a special day for celebration.
