Celebrations in Pakistan

Home  » Celebrations in Pakistan

Pakistan is one of the major Asian countries known for its festivities and religious occasions. Most of the festivals that are celebrated in this part of the world are annual. However, all such festivals are some way or the other dependent upon the Islamic calendar. Ramadan, the ninth month of the Islamic calendar is marked with abstaining from food consumption for about 29 to 30 days. Soon after this mourning period is over, the festival of Eid Ul Fitr takes place.

In another festival by the name of Eid Ul Adha, animals are sacrificed in memory of the actions that were taken by the legendary Prophet Abraham. The meat is then shared with friends and other relatives. Both these festivals do bring along with them public holidays, much to the relief of the common man. It will also provide you with the opportunity to meet your near and dear ones, share pleasantries and spend some time together.

Another important festival of Pakistan is the Eid-e-milad-un-Nabi. It is the birthday of Prophet Mohammad, and takes place in the third month of the Islamic calendar. Muslims are also known to celebrate the day of Ashurah, on consecutive 9th and 10th day of the first month. . This is in memory of Prophet Mohammed’s grandson, Husayn bin Ali.

However, the festivals of Pakistan do not only include Muslim festive occasions. The festive occasions of the Sikhs, Hindus and Persians are also celebrated here. Even the shrine of Guru Nanak, the founder of Sikhism is situated at Hassan Abdal in the Attock district, which is in Pakistan. The Punjabi festival of Basant, is immensely popular in this part of the world. With this festival, the practice of flying kites begins every year. Basant, is indeed the most popular non-Muslim festival of Pakistan. However, an important characteristic of all the Pakistani festivals is that they are associated with a season or two. Most of the festivals here embrace the onset of a particular season like Nauroze embraces the onset of spring.
