Russian Celebrations

Home  » Russian Celebrations

One of the leading political and military powers in the world, Russia lays on the extreme east of Europe and is considered the part of Eurasia. Previously it was the largest constituent of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR). However, this federation broke off with the end of the cold war, after which Russia emerged as an individual identity of its own. Russia is noted for its orthodoxy and conservative policies.

The country was once upon a time the fountainhead and torch-bearer of Marxian socialist ideologies. Thus Russian orthodoxy can be inferred as the main dictating religion here. However, Islam and Christianity as religions are also in vogue in certain parts of Russia. The Volga and Caucasus region in Russia are more influenced by the Islamic religion and the rest of the parts comprise mostly of followers of Judaism, Roman Catholicism and a little bit of Buddhism. At www.celebrations.com you are provided with an insight into the various festivals and celebrations that take place in the huge land mass of country called Russia.

  • To begin with, one of the most interesting and exciting Russian festivals is the Maslyanitsa. The word Maslyanitsa in Russian means 'butter.' This festival is celebrated in Russia in the spring season. It is mainly a traditional Russian carnival.
  • Spas are a Russian festival that is celebrated in the month of August. It is celebrated in three terms, the first is known as the Honey Spas, the second is the Apple Spas and the third is the Nut spas.
  • Troitsa is the festival related to Russian folk lore. During the celebration of Troitsa, houses are decorated with fresh green branches and the birch tree plays an important role.
  • Red Hill is celebrated on the first Sunday that comes just after the Easter. The Russians consider this particular day to be the best for marriage purpose.
  • Revolution Day marks the long drawn struggle between the Russian people against the czars. The Revolution took place in the year 1917 and on every 7th and 8th November the Revolution Day festival is celebrated.
  • Ice Festival signifies the end of the winter season in Russia. On this particular day sculptures are curved out on the ice masses.

The demise of the USSR and emergence of Russia as an independent nation-state has led to a number of significant socio-political changes in the country. Consequently, more and more socio-religious festivals are becoming popular and are celebrated with a great degree of enthusiasm and fervor. No wonder, people in Russia today are celebrating and enjoying more of festivals than ever before.

The United States of America (USA) is the third largest country of this world and occupies a large part of the North America continent. Surrounded by North Atlantic Ocean, North Pacific Ocean, Canada, Mexico and the Gulf of Mexico this magnificent country boasts of enormously diverse geographical locations and grand festivals and celebrations.
