A culturally rich and diverse country,
Switzerland boasts of a number of
popular celebrations each year. The
concentration of respective linguistic
groups in particular locations here
does influence the celebrations to
a certain extent. The festivals like
Afro Pfingstien festival, Bex Rock
festival, Blue Balls festival, Caribana
Festival provides impetus to the socio-cultural
fabric of the country.
Caribana celebrations (known locally
as Crans-pres-Celigny) began their
operations in the year 1990. The celebrations
started as a purely 'Lake Side Music
Event' and still continues. During
the past 17 years right from the beginning,
the celebrations have grown and the
number of visitors thronging the venue
of the celebrations has gone up to
more than 20,000.
Caribana Festival begins on June
7 and ends on June 10, three days
later. The venue of the celebrations
is Port de Crans. The Swiss culture
of organizing celebrations is to hold
musical extravaganza on the region
of 'La Cote' on Lake Geneva.
The focus of Caribana festival is
to promote programmes based on religion
with special emphasis on global themes
and attract thousands of spectators.
Some of the noticeable performers
at the Caribana festival are Patti
Smith, Macy Gray, Israel Vibration,
Good Charlotte, Sally Nyolo and Evanescence.
As part of the celebrations, the port
of Caribana becomes the venue for
a remote control boat race.
