Indeed, Thanksgiving tradition is a major constituent of every American family's lifestyle. Each family has its own way to celebrate and observe the Thanksgiving feast.
Though religious customs and traditions are different for different people in the four corners of the world, yet, the sentiments and feelings for the celebration remains the same. Thanksgiving is a special occasion to thank God for His benevolence and generosity. Hence, the ultimate tradition of the Thanksgiving Day is to offer pre-meal prayers to God thanking him for everything good-good life, good food and good living that He has bestowed upon us. Primarily, people offer 'thank you' to God for the bounty of crops, cereals, vegetable and fruits that He gave us. Also, there is so much production in the fields that these can be even stored for the winter season.
Making wishes on the Thanksgiving day is yet another most common and popular thanksgiving tradition all over the world. No doubt, turkey stuffing is different in each family but they never forget to make a wish on this special 'thanking' day. They believe that since God has given them so much, He would give them much more next year!! Indeed, it is a long tradition to fight over the wishbone from the Thanksgiving Turkey. This tradition is also known as a 'lucky break'. The history of this specific 'fowl's bone wish' dates back to around 322 BC to Etruscans. It was brought to England by Romans and to America by English colonists.
Observing Thanksgiving parade is yet another interesting Thanksgiving tradition in America. In fact, the First Thanksgiving Parade was held by Gimbel's Department Store in Philadelphia around 1920. There is also a Macy's Thanksgiving Day's parade held in New York City that started around 1924. Thanksgiving parade has become a national annual event with balloons, floats, and bands.
