History of Valentine’s Day

A world full of mesmerizing love experiences is sure to make this Valentine 2008 the most memorable affair for your entire life. The historical background of Valentine’s Day goes back to ancient times. It was during the ‘Feast of Lupercal’ (celebrated to honor the Roman God of Fertility), a ritual was followed during which a young man chose the name of his beloved for the rest of the year. This ritual was known as ‘name drawing’. Since then, Romans considered this day as the day of Cupid and ‘the day of love’. But this day received its name from a lover and this happened after many years.

Bishop Valentine

The lover who gave the date ‘14th February’ his name was Bishop Valentine. He was a priest in Rome and at that time ‘Claudius the Cruel’ ruled the city. He was known to unite lovers in the holy marriages. In spite of being in jail, he continued to perform his religious duties i.e. Christian conversions and marriages. So, Claudius ordered to execute him. This priest, in fact, started the culture of writing love notes. He revealed his undying love for Christian God. Hence, he was considered as the patron Saint of Lovers. Thereon, all the lovers of the world give a tribute to his Saint
